  • I’m always home and don’t care if solicitors know it. If they look in the window they walk past, they see me. I used to try to hide but now I just watch them.

I have a no soliciting sign I wrote myself and taped to the door that says simply “no soliciting, no exceptions”. If they knock or leave their shit on my door I report them to the company they came from, as that’s illegal in my area. I frame it as their canvassers needing up-training and remind the company that if it continues they are breaking the law each and every time, and if it happens again I won’t contact them about it, I’ll report it elsewhere. I submit the thing anonymously through whatever contact us portal they have and a bullshit email address, so they can’t tie it to an address.

The only people who are legally allowed to knock are canvassers for political shit (and census people but that’s rare) so during election seasons I have a separate sign that says “I refuse to talk about politics with strangers. Go away and take your junk with you.”

I don’t get bothered much. But I do see people walk up to my door, then leave, at least once a week.

I’ve never had a problem with uninvited guests tho, as I’ve never ever had an open door policy for anyone. If I don’t expect you, you don’t come in. End of.

Specifically the upper peninsula region, and probably more rural, they sound quite similar to that stereotypical Canadian accent. The first time I met someone from there (born and raised country boy), I legit thought he was from Canada due to that stereotype (I’m older and wiser now).

  • Knowing if you are picking up food from a tiny place where one of two people do everything, or a big one with full kitchen staff, is calculus? Around me you can tell by the size of the parking lot so it’s dead simple. But even if not you can absolutely tell when you walk in to pick it up.

I agree that tipping shouldn’t exist, I hate working for tips. But since I do, there are things I won’t do because they don’t pay. Like going above and beyond for to-go orders.

And this is why when people call for to-go orders after I’ve started doing clean-up (usually 8 or 9), I won’t take their order and tell them kitchen is closed for to-go. If they come in to order that’s fine, and most nights I’ll do it basically up until I close down, because they are more likely to tip for it, and re-cleaning isn’t that hard. The owner of the place told me it’s entirely my call on that, and she won’t re-open the kitchen for to-go either because people usually don’t tip for it.

I cook everything myself as well as being the only bartender, and our food is fairly inexpensive, so it doesn’t end up costing all that much and 10% is basically nothing, assuming they even leave that. I’m not doing that shit for no reason. Fuck all that noise.

So do be conscious of what sort of place it is before you apply that rule. If it’s somewhere with a full kitchen and kitchen staff that gets paid decently, sure. Little bar and grill with at most 2 people working and making not that much? Ehhhh…

Domesticated is a bit of a stretch, especially when we often hope they still hunt rodents. 😜

They tolerate us, and maybe often love us, but would not hesitate to survive without us.

Cats are independent people that choose to continue to live with you because it’s nice. Most of them can find a way out if they want it.
