  • (This is only tangentially related, sorry for the notification. I just want to complain. I hope you understand)

I bought a used, old HP laptop with a fairly capable AMD apu for some power and cost efficient gaming. Problem is that even though modern games can theoretically run on it at playable frame rates at very low settings, HP does not allow you to change how much RAM is dedicated to the GPU in BIOS. They have a setting, but its locked behind a BIOS only they have access to. Its quite frustrating that I have capable hardware but cannot use it to its full extent because of this software lockout. Knowing that they lock their consumer BIOS’ down like this is absolutely keeping me from buying HP basically ever again, because I really want to make the most of my hardware and keep it all alive as long as possible to reduce waste, and they won’t let me.

  • I’ve been seeing waaaay too much unwarranted vitriol and anger in comments lately, for things that really aren’t that big a deal (like Linux vs windows) and I find it disappointing. As a community we should want Lemmy to grow, and yes that does mean we will get more “normie” posts, but imo that’s good and if someone doesn’t like it they can use more niche community spaces, which there will be more of with a larger userbase.

  • There is a downside, and that’s why Switch 1 games have an option to become digital cartridges and it is not forced.

The downside resides in if a single account has multiple switches. With the current system, you have a primary switch on your account, and this switch can play any digital title whenever it wants. Any secondary switches on that account need to connect to the internet anytime they want to play a title. This leads to a flow where you may have your primary switch be a portable one (no need for internet to boot) and a secondary switch to be a dedicated at-home or docked device. Either switch can play any game you own without really planning much of anything. This will not be possible with the new system, where you will need to move digital licenses between consoles.

Additionally, you could have a friends account on your switch and you could borrow games that way, or they could sign in and play their games on your console while visiting you without having planned it before. Now, they will have to bring their own switch or otherwise preplan wanting to play a game on another console, and move that digital cartridge.

While I do think the new system is overall better, I also think its just wrong to claim there are no downsides when compared to the current system.

  • As someone very excited for this watch, the battery life with an always on display is more important to me than a sp02 sensor (Btw it will do sleep tracking). That and the button navigation are the killer features. The watch shows me what I need to know when I need to know it, always has the time on, and I can navigate it and control media playback without having to look at it (since buttons are consistent). I want a smart watch to be a good watch first then being smart is the second priority, and the pebble is the only watch I’ve ever had that gets those priorities right for me. Every other smart watch I’ve used sacrifices something I value to fit more features that I dont value as much. The pebbles have just gotten it right for me.

That said, the watch also isn’t for everyone, and a lot of people are OK charging their watch every day if it means they also get every feature they want.

  • While I love 8bitdo, unfortunately I just dont find the Ultimate to be comfortable to use, and that will be the same with the sequel. I do, however, absolutely love my Pro 2. Its shaped like a SNES controller with handles and it is somehow the most comfortable controller I’ve ever used. it is the only controller with both analog sticks low that I find comfortable and yet it is more comfortable than all x-box styled controllers I’ve used. If they made a new version of that with 2.4ghz, TMR sticks, and updated all of their controllers to actually provide every function available in d-input mode at once for better customization, then it would be the perfect controller for me.

I did recently get the gamesir cyclone 2, and that is also an incredible controller. All it is missing feature-wise is that fully featured d-input mode, and an easy Bluetooth mode switch like the pro 2 has. The analog sticks are outstanding on it, but unfortunately the dpad just can’t compete with 8bitdo. Again though, the cyclone 2 and pro 2 are overall incredible controllers for different reasons.

  • PineTime has been the only watch I’ve liked since my pebble, but it is a downgrade to my overall experience. If I want a good battery life (great, even) I can’t have an always on screen, and I miss the physical buttons for interacting without looking. The vibration motor is solid, though.

I will miss my 28 day long battery when I leave it. Hopefully a new pebble can achieve a similar battery life.

  • At least to respond to the first segment here, the pinned comment on the VOD does attribute their GN’s reporting for the segment. It does exactly what Linus said he would do in communication with Steve.

Does the pinned comment do a great job? Absolutely not, but it does what Steve agreed to, and he should have spoken up sooner if he didn’t like it.

They didn’t attribute on the clips channel cut, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the result of poor internal communication at LMG (likely by Linus since he likely handled the request on the VOD) to remember to include that attribution in that upload. Again, it would have been good if Steve let them know about it and asked for them to be more careful in the future. Its hard for a large group of people to be organized in that way and reminders are helpful. To bring it up years later in a legal threat is poor form, even if he is technically in the right.

To add onto my last comment though, I like watching the content from both of these creators and will continue to do so. My interpretation is neither is evil nor bad, but that there has been a series of poor communication and differing standards and expectations between them.

  • Just finished reading. In summary: everyone loses here.

Linus made some silly but understandable mistakes, had some very poor word choices in private communications, and got Steve on the defensive by publicly mentioning he didn’t want to sue but implied he could. LMG is also (in the youtube world) a large company and is likely always working on process improvements, and the improvement Steve seems to want to happen that they are definitely lacking in, is to update old content with corrections or omissions.

Steve poorly or never communicated what he thought were satisfactory resolutions to past comments or incidents and is upset that those resolutions didn’t happen, and is only escalating the situation further by softly threatening legal action, while also hinting that they have way more evidence they are just conveniently leaving out despite their current evidence being mostly empty (specifically receipts 1 and 2).

They both run very different channels with different focuses and staff sizes and production values, and each has made mistakes. None of this spat should have been public, but it seems both parties are just bad at communicating with one another and it has only escalated due to LMG actually publicly responding to public allegations by GN.

If I had to declare a winner so far, Steve is looking worse for wear to me given the poor examples provided as receipts and the continued threat of legal escalation, but again - everyone loses here. Everyone looks worse and this should have been handled privately. Maybe LMG should appoint someone other than Linus to handle fellow media contacts, because it doesn’t seem like he’s the best for that job.
