Nor do I think he’s a horrible person for edgy comments and actions that most of us have definitely done one way or another on the Internet.

Now, I pay no attention at all to pewdiepie, and this is the first I’ve heard about this paying people to hold up an anti-semitic sign as a “joke”, or whatever, but from my limited knowledge, this sort of behavior is absolutely the hallmark of a horrible person. There is a world of difference between the average “edgy” comment and paying people to hold up a sign that says “death to all jews”.

The difference is dark humor. Maybe it’s not for you, and it’s not really for me, but surely you can recognize the humor and irony in it if you take a moment. It’s kind of like Ashton Kutcher’s “punk’d,” but even less tasteful. Similar “edgy” content with a different theme would be something like llamas with hats, which jokes about murder (including nuclear bombs) and sociopathy, with graphic, hand drawn images. It’s very dark, but there’s absolutely humor there.

The important thing is to recognize it for what it is (dark humor) and not affix any additional meaning to it. Gamers are notoriously toxic and edgy, but that doesn’t mean they believe the nonsense they spew.

Nazis legitimately support ethnic cleansing and authoritarian control in government, and will support any measure that benefits the government and the majority over minorities. I don’t see any of that in PewDiePie, just tasteless jokes with very edgy themes.
