Just wondering what the limit is on rule 2 as I see things like covid vaccine effect questions, what scams are still around and other spicy topics. Don’t want to make anyone upset but it seemed odd.

Asking about the worst Lemmy communities is an easy way to share negative sentiment which has no real value and causes a lot of work for the mods. We’re a small team and looking at the comments that had already been posted, it wasn’t something that was worth our time to keep up with. Hence rule #2.

I would like to know peoples opinions on communities, what would be your advice on how to ask that here? Also is this the plan going forward to remove any post that could turn into a fight? And what of the people that put the insult comments in? Do they just continue on maybe bullying any post they don’t like until it is removed?

The discussion on communities is better suited to [email protected].

See rule #2 - we specifically are careful around offensive topics because we don’t have the bandwidth to moderate them carefully. That can mean allowing a conversation to run to see where it goes if one of us has bandwidth - if it goes well, great. If not, it gets locked or removed, depending on the amount of interaction and the tone of the comments. Actively following each thread and removing comments as they come up isn’t possible due to bandwidth and tools, so it’s a question of looking at the value to the community and overall tone.

A post that is unnecessarily provocative or won’t lead to a good discussion is generally removed early.

Regarding bullying, that’s very much on our radar. There isn’t a hard and fast rule and needs to be dealt with on a per situation basis.

Feel free to take a look at the mod log (link is in the sidebar) for examples of how we handle tougher conversations.

I’m guessing because OP was lying about his interaction with hexbear and their removed comments as well as that post were posted as a screenshot to hexbear. There was probably a huge flood of hexbear comments calling them out and the mods figured it would be easier to just remove the post.

    Just my guess.

But I read those interactions and I did not see anything there that was misrepresented. I guess I am wondering why not just remove the insult comments as they broke the rules instead of nuking the whole thing?

My guess is that it’s just an equation of energy input and time spent. Is it worth removing the problem comments if they keep coming back? How much time as a mod are you willing to spend removing and banning people like that? I can understand taking the approach they did. Personally, I think maybe just locking the thread would’ve been a better compromise. But I’m not a mod here nor would I want to be lol

Is it weird I hope its due to laziness? Like I get it, moderating a potential dumpster fire and all, but it does give a lot of power and potential for bullying content.

This post or the one mentioned? This post is still here, the “What’s the worst Lemmy community you’ve run across?” is not.

I literally just commented on it.

Edit: check my comment history and you can see it. Unless the individual made multiple posts about it I guess?

Is your instance behind? Cause I have multiple comments in this post as well.

            https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/371398/What-s-the-worst-Lemmy-community-you-ve-run-across#entry-comment-1885503

Edit: starting to think it might simply exist only elsewhere and not on that instance itself.

Odd that my history doesn’t show properly for you as there are even more comments on this post.

Must be something about how kbin works, Thanks for the full original link though.

What? Really they seemed heavy handed lately. I am just more wondering where the line is for this sort of thing. I think questions about communities are likely a good thing for lemmy overall and would like to find out if that was why this was pulled.

You don’t want to talk about the evils of NATO and the scourge of western imperialism in every single thread? What a lib!

I guess so, its just odd as the reason listed is “Leads to #2” and that seems a bit odd. Love the ability to look these things up, though.

The post in question was obviously loaded. The poster’s comments were absolutely out of line with the community in question. There was nothing polite or civil about them and questioning why one wouldn’t engage with uncivil discussion is at best ludicrous, at worst, toxic. They then got upset that they suffered consequences and got ragged on for it when they acted all hurt that their actions had consequences.

At no point was there any civil way to engage with the person. If you think they were civil, you have an odd baseline for that. Turning the other cheek isn’t a requirement in society. No one needs to deal with toxic people of they don’t want to. Honestly, with how hard you’re trying and the communication between the two of you, I almost feel like you two are the same person. Like, what happened to the original poster is not mysterious to anyone but them.
