Dollar Tree being only a single dollar on everything.
I didn’t know Dollar Tree existed further back in the years like the 80s. But, I didn’t discover the store until like late 2000s. That store was a godsend for my then mostly broke ass. Sure the quality of products could’ve been better and the food selection could’ve been better, but they were there for me and others who’re strapped on budgets.
And it was a good 16 years while that lasted. It is a little annoying at times to shop there and know it is no different than Dollar General and Family Dollar. But it could’ve been worse.
Pokemon games before generation 6 (7 was perhaps a brief return to form).
I’ll go get my walker. Gen 4 was a big dissapointment to me (outside of the physical/special split) and where I stopped keeping up with the new releases. The plot didn’t grip me, but I also never picked up Platinum. Maybe that one somehow makes it better.
In my entirely objectively right opinion, Gen 2 had the best “world”/“setting” and Gen 3 had the best “mysteries”/“secrets” and postgame with Emerald. Someone deserves to be jailed for leaving the Battle Frontier out of ORAS.
I tried to love Soul Silver, after all the many hours I put into GSC, but never finished it. I’ve also tried Black and White, BW2, XY, and ORAS. A good amount of the “gold standard” rebalance/QoL hacks too (Drayano is the GOAT). It just doesn’t keep me like it used to. Get at most 3 or 4 gyms in and just lose interest.
SWSH was the death knell of pokemon games, it got lazier and lazier, to not even trying. and masuda said he would do this, because he got burnt out. the console game needs to be handed out to another company. too bad people ars still buying the slop.
Platinum fixes a lot of the issues that Diamond and Pearl had, namely the extremely slow animations and health bars, as well as the lack of available fire types. It’s the definitive way to play Gen 4, especially Drayano’s Renegade Platinum.
Yeah Gen 4 was my exit from the main games too. I just remember everything being so bloody slow in that game. Everything took so long. Just using cut required a cut scene.
The original Diamond and Pearl are almost unplayable without using an emulator to speed it up. Especially the health bars. Looking at you, Victory Road trainer with a Blissey!

Despite being prime age for Pokemon Red when it came out, I didn’t get into the games until my 20s. Heart Gold was my introduction to the series. Black & White came out soon after that, so it was my first “new” Pokemon game that I was excited for.
I eventually went back and played gens 3 and 4 as well. Despite that, I must say, these endless rehashes of old games are quite confusing for someone new to the series. I wish I had been in from the start.
I enjoyed ORAS, gen 7, and I’m maybe a bit embarrassed to say it but Scarlet, despite being technologically and aesthetically bankrupt, was rather fun. Brilliant Diamond has also become a bit of a comfort game that I’ve replayed 4 or 5 times now.
Right now, I’m on a GBA romhack kick, with a heavy preference for original regions with a deliberately selected pokedex consisting of official 'mons from a range of generations. Recently enjoyed Pokemon Lazarus so much that I’m replaying it.
The ROM hacking scene has had so many awesome hacks recently, I can hardly keep up! I’ve been playing Elite Redux and Emerald Rogue a lot recently, and heavily enjoyed Unbound and Gaia. There’s a bunch of new DS hacks coming that are looking very promising too, including ones with original regions. We may very well see a DS hacking renaissance soon!
Gen 2 was the GOAT. It had enough Pokemon count (you could collect them all without the effort that it takes now) and Pokémon stadium 2. Everything else has been men after that, though I did like secret caves and change in attacks. Now if y’all excuse me it’s time for my medication and back to rocking chair.
Movie theaters. Post-pandemic, tickets are more expensive, cinemas are more run-down, and people don’t know movie theater etiquette.

I make it a point to go to matinees on a weekday because of it, though we’re lucky here in Kansas City to have a local movie theatre chain that’s really good. I just hope they last through the coming years.

Honestly going to the movie theatre is an experience best had with friends/family/dates. I regularly check the schedules at a few local and not so local theatres and make plans with friends if there’s something we want to see. Usually it ends up being one of the times they replay some older films (for example many of the Studio Ghibli films get theatre time at least once a year and it’s a wonderful way to see those beautiful films) because there just aren’t many new movies I want to see coming out.
I actually experience the opposite.
Theaters have great movies, indie films, and showing old movies again. Everyone has been super respectful, and there’s been a few renovated theaters around me. And tickets (at the one I go to) i think are 8 or 10 dollars if you pay cash. The fancy theater is like 18 but I dont go there. Even the renovated original theater is only 10 dollars and has recliners!
And I dont even live in a city. More of a town.
I hope the trend of showing old movies continues for a long time. It gives people the opportunity to experience what it’s like to watch good classics on a big screen.
I thought I would treat myself to an IMAX showing of Oppenheimer. Worst experience of my life. Seats were old and uncomfortable with sticky shit everywhere. The seating arrangement was shit and my view was less than desirable. Audio kicked ass, but I had to walk out. I ended up going the next day to a regular showing at a different theater with the recliners and had a much better experience.
I haven’t been back to the theater since but I have been to several local stage theaters and have enjoyed that immensely. Otherwise, I just watch all my movies at home now

i spent most of my teens and 20s at the movies, 5 bucks a movie was easy to justify. i went religiously every other week.
now it’s 20+ bucks and there are always assholes kids on their phones or talking during the movie. i go maybe once a year now. i rarely have a good time. my 4K OLED tv w/ 4K is a way better picture than most every theatre. i have a better time going to the library to rent a blu ray for free than I do going to the movies.
24/7 stores is an easy one, same with the early internet.
Personally, I’d say commuting. People are getting way crazier with how they drive these days, more distracted overall, and just plain stupid.
Commuting was never good.

And then having to wait an entire goddamn 3 months to find out the outcome.
Ending seasons on cliffhangers was magical. It’s still attempted sometimes today, but in the age of binge-watching and in some cases years between seasons, most shows just wrap up one season arc and start a new one. Kind of sucks.
A lot of good shows also end up canceled with cliffhangers so it’s a double-edged sword. I’m still pissed about Alphas not having a proper ending.
I hate cliffhangers. Especially since new seasons aren’t guaranteed.

I mean, the Climax was a pretty sweet geared locomotive for usecases where you just need to haul a ton of stuff over rough track with one very light engine. Now they just use trucks and call it a day

It’s either that, or I have a little buthurt fan following me around. It happens here a lot.
Pokémon Go. Those first few weeks and months were nothing like anyone could have imagined from a mobile game. People were outside and enjoying a game with other people. I remember seeing videos of people all running because a rare Pokemon had spawned somewhere and everyone was helping each other to get to it.
The game itself was a simple affair anyone and everyone could play with no paywalls or subscriptions. Now it’s just paywalled events, Pokemon locked behind those events and it’s just a slog to play now.
I’m glad I got to be a part of those early days.
I never played it, but it looked like a good time for people into Pokemon for sure. Unfortunately on the flip side, I know of it being a problem in some specific areas too. A friend in Seattle wasn’t getting any sleep for weeks because idiots were ruining it for everyone by running loudly at 1 to 3 am near his apartment. I hope that if any other big AR game goes live, they enforce quiet hours.
Reminds me of geochaching. I don’t think the website charged, a GPS wasn’t already in everyone’s hands, and the stuff we his was good stuff.
Now they have Premium if you want to do it, and it just isn’t the same.

For me, way too much being put behind a paywall. And not just big events. I get a real world event like the Go Fests should be, I even was going to go to one but Covid stopped it. But it got to the point where it seemed every in game event started to have a paywalled part to it. They started putting Pokemon behind them too and community days started to have them too. Was just too much.
I remember my entire team going for a walk suddenly when someone realised there was an interesting Pokemon that had spawned nearby.
