It’s the second time in two years that a worker has died from injuries sustained in an accident at the Mar-Jac poultry facility.
Workers under the age of 18 are supposedly not allowed to work in poultry plants because the dangerous conditions make it a violation of labor laws.
The boy who died was in the 8th grade, his name was Duvan Perez.
That makes it even sadder. 16 in 8th grade would mean he had been held back a couple of times or something in the same vein. I wonder how long he had been working there.
:(
I think you’re right. I started school a year later than I was eligible, and I was 16 late into my freshman year.
I was 16 as a sophomore. Best case scenario, it’s someone like you. Worst case scenario, someone dropped out for the work at this meat plant.
:(
Yeah, but people want cheap chicken and most don’t give a fuck how they get it.
that is no excuse for child labour.
Just the usual neoliberal apologism, blaming the customers for the abhorrent things the executives do to quench their greed.
If you asked functionally anybody if they want child labor chicken and slave made clothing, they’re going to say “no”.
They buy it because they don’t know, because they can’t afford another option or because there simply is no other option because Child Killin Chickin undercut the competiton by being the biggest psycopaths.
Ah but this way I can still vote republican
Go vegan, then you can avoid supporting child labor and animal abuse!
You sincerely think other agricultural industries don’t also exploit their laborers?
I have some bad news for you, friend…
From what I hear, “poultry facilities” (aka “chicken plants”) or horrible places to work. It is this companies second issue in two years. This time with a minor, I would hope this will carry more than a $30,000 fine.
