In a set of fascistic speeches on Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, White House power broker Stephen Miller, and other top Trump administration officials labelled the political left as a “terrorist” threat and vowed to use all of the tools at their disposal to systematically destroy left-wing groups. Representatives from 67 countries gathered in the U.S. on Thursday for a meeting…

Just for perspective, I learned in American public school in the 1990s that the US is a democratic republic, not a democracy. This is correct, even though these rectal tumors are weaponizing it.

A democratic republic is a flavour of democracy, just like a constitutional monarchy is.

Yes, it’s nominally supposed to be, but it lets you put the emPHAsis on the other syllABle so that when you want it to become less of a democratic republic and more of a Republican White-Christofascist Theocracy it doesn’t sound like such a drastic change because it’s still got the same word in it.

No I dont think it is. How often does what the people want happen in congress? like 0-1% of the time right? studies have shown this. We all need to stop pretending this is a school house rock episode. Neither political party cares about their voters issues. This is not a democracy. We are ruled by people accountable to rich donors, and thats that.

The Republican party have been using that line to foster anti-democratic sentiment for decades. My trumper dad is literally at the point where he has told me, “we don’t want democracy. Democracy means ‘mob rule’”.

Red state education? The US is a representative democracy. The word “democracy” does not automatically imply direct democracy.

The magats intentionally play these childish word games so they can justify their authoritarian, anti-American wet dreams.

I don’t actually think so. There are democratic elements but the president isn’t elected by popular vote. There’s universal suffrage but in practice a large percentage of the population is disenfranchised. There’s no power of recall in most instances of public office. Then there are the practicalities of running for office which only allows for a small elite… at what point do you still get to call this a democracy given all of its republican and oligarchic features?

How is that any different from any other democracy? The term was birthed in Athens where only free men could vote and in practice the oligarchy held must of the power. There’s always been a hypocrital element to the word.

That doesn’t mean we should surrender to magat word games.
