I’m looking for answers from instance admins, if you’re a regular user, you can still answer but it’s more helpful for me to get answers directly from admins.

If a user on [instance A] asked another instance (Instance B) to remove their federated account and federated content copies from instance B (likely also banning it so content doesn’t continue to flow) would the user on Instance A be in trouble with their instance admin for asking for such a thing.

Obviously it depends on the instance’s rules but that’s part of why I’m asking the question, to get answers from instance admins on this.

On one hand I can see how it would since, since it hurts interoperability and can create tension between instances, but on the other hand a user has the right to be in specific places or not be in those places, that probably extends to not wanting to be federated into an instance they find objectionable (assuming it is for good reasons).

As long as the reason for the ban says that it was personally requested, then I don’t see why it would be a bad thing. Obviously being banned from another instance for legitimate reasons is a cause for concern and could lead to trouble in your own instance, but if it is clear that it was only because you requested it yourself, then it’s fine.

Being banned from a remote instance, and/or having your content removed from a remote instance, is a total non-issue for your local instance’s admins. It requires no effort on their part, and causes no problems.

In my mind you have every right to request that your personal content be removed. It isn’t always practical due to federation bugs and the nature of distributed services, but any decent admin should make a good faith attempt to fulfill your request.

I kinda think instance blocks at the user level are the right way to handle this. If you don’t want to have your content federate with my rather small server… I mean okay, but I’d mostly just be annoying it required me to fulfill that request manually rather than it being something you did.

I would probably do what was described only for an instance like Hexbear, Lemmygrad, or the one alt-right troll instance on Lemmy. One where nothing good really comes out of being with them. Instance blocks can keep their communties and posts out of my feeds, and I’d definitely do that, but if I want to keep their trolling and emoji spam out of my comments, there isn’t exactly a better way to do it. Having an instance manually ban me isn’t something I’d do for any ordinary instance, it has to be an extremely troublesome one, like the ones I mentioned.

I know that some people get along great in places like hexbear, but for me they’ve just been confrontational to me on my main.

You should just switch to an instance that defederate those instances, or convince your current instance to do so.

IMO if they request themselves to be banned from a remote instance for such a reason, I don’t see the harm on my end.
