Careful what you wish for OP. There are some really bizarre, disturbing and/or dark movies out there.
So I imagine you’ve shown him a lot of classic movies like The Matrix, Fight Club, Princess Bride, etc. So here are my recommendations for movies I would have wanted to see when I was 17. Some are gonna be a bit unknown.
I went into Interstellar completely blind when it came out. I can’t even describe how awesome it was watching that one for the first time. Easily up there on my top favorites.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (probably watch the original Terminator also, but its not necesary) (This is a must watch, soooo goood. 😍🎞)

1917 (War Film)
Primer (Time Travel, get your mind blown 🕑)
12 Angry Men (1957) (This is about jury trial, might not be interesting for everyone, also its kinda old, very old, but very interesting)

2nd on 1917. It’s a serious thriller from beginning to end. An absolutely epic movie.
