Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Scientists ejected from diabetes conference for distributing journal reprintsEnglish
25·10 hours agoFive leading scientists were ousted from the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in New Orleans on Friday. Their crime: handing out copies of an editorial, published in the journal Diabetes Care on April 29, sharply criticizing the Trump administration’s ongoing attacks on scientific research.
The ADA confirmed to MedPage Today that five registered scientists had been removed from the meeting, claiming the scientists had violated the organization’s code of conduct for conferences. “These attendees were escorted out by our onsite event security because they demonstrated behavior not consistent with this code of conduct,” the ADA media team said in a statement. “They were respectfully given the opportunity to cease this behavior and chose not to which is why they were escorted out.”
“All attendees will conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner, free from any form of discrimination, harassment, or intimidation,” the code of conduct states. “Inappropriate conduct, including but not limited to harassment; threatening or unwelcome physical or verbal actions; or disorderly or disruptive conduct such as protesting, will not be tolerated.”
Sounds like they are interpreting the rules in an unnatural way and saying that handing out articles is “protesting” simply because they are political. Are the event organizers “obeying in advance”? That is difficult to believe, since it is not a huge event.
As it sounds like these people continued to hand out the articles after being asked to stop, I suspect it is more likely that the organizers are simply MAGA, and we know that MAGA will do anything and break any rules themselves to silence dissent.

16·1 day agoThere was an episode of South Park where the kids claimed that a word that we view as a bigoted slur against gay men actually referred to people who loudly ride motorcycles at night.
If reason doesn’t work for flat earthers, maybe we should use one of the well-known euphemisms that we no longer use for people whose mental abilities are far below average. You know, like, “special”.

Hell, I’ll challenge Trump right here to a spelling competition.

5·2 days agoAmazon Prime Music already had a major enshittification in its past. It used to be that it was essentially a catalog of music that you could listen to and make playlists and such. Then they changed it so that you couldn’t exactly listen to the songs you wanted to, and instead you had to listen to the Amazon playlists or stations and your only real controls were the shuffle button, as I doubt the “like” button really did anything.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Last year, Canadian politicians banned bike lanes and speed cameras in Toronto. Now it's blowing up in their face. You reap what you sow.English
133·3 days agoTo be fair, there are problems with speed cameras that we’ve seen in the US, so probably similar problems exist in Canada. For example, they’re often outsourced to private companies, and there are privacy and accuracy concerns. Local governments with access to speed cameras can make a lot of money from speed traps, and so they have a financial incentive to make the road harder to drive on, when they should be making roads easier to drive on. People sometimes see speed cameras and slam their brakes, which can cause all sorts of problems.
Usually, the better way to control speed is to design your roads to naturally be a certain speed. Some ways you can do this is by controlling the width of the lanes, the length of the lines in the lane dividers, and the curve of the road.

102·3 days agoRealistically, a platform where you can delete your own questions so that they disappear for everyone isn’t the best platform for technical support communities. But a platform where you can’t delete your own posts is not the best platform for for a lot of other things, like privacy.
Two use cases without overlap seems like a good argument that there should be two different platforms.
Whale language is comparable to Chinese, and so therefore whales are Chinese? What an anthropocentric way of putting it. Obviously, the whale language came first, and it is the Chinese who have appropriated whale culture, maybe even without permission!

7·5 days agoI don’t know what you read, if it was actually truncated for you, but there is an entire article. It’s just that the article’s actual content is “Did you know Steam has porn? I think they are saying that more information on that topic is in the linked non-free Bloomberg article.
