Yes of course. On the btrbk homepage they even describe how to set it up so that a backup gets triggered automatically when you plug in a designated backup drive.

My setup is to create local snapshots and keep X amount of local snapshots. Copy snapshots to a remote server and keep a different amount of snapshots there. Finally I also have a backup drive and btrbk is setup to copy all my local snapshots to that backup drive when it’s plugged in.

So many options. As others have mentioned, rsync, borg, restic, etc. You might want to look into filesystem snapshots. If you use something like BTRFS you can create instant snapshots and send them to a second BTRFS formatted disk or even a remote system with a BTRFS filesystem.

ZFS would also work here.

I use btrbk for automatic BTRFS snapshots and backing them up to remote systems.

If you want built-in encryption you can use Borg or Restic, which also has the advantage of deduplicating within a single backup set. Restic can also backup to an s3 bucket, in case you want to use a cloud service.

Smart things my “stupid” dog does:

1. I have a box with gamepads, remotes and headphones next to the coch. My dog knows thats off-limits to him. If he wants attention and I ignore him long enough, he will then start to paw at the box. Sort of to say “Look at me…look what I’m doing…I’m touching the box…can’t ignore me now…”

2. Anytime he does something super cute, the microsecond when I point my phone camera at him, he will turn away. Not if I suddenly reach for my phone, not if I’m just scrolling, but literally as soon as I want to tap the shutter button. It’s become quite a challenge to try and sneakily take pictures of him.

3. Both my wife and me work from home 9-5. He will pretty much sleep during that time and not be much of a bother. Around 6 we have Dinner, and then take him for a walk for him to do his business. After that we relax in front of the TV. He pretty much knows we’ll watch about two episodes of some show, then step outside for a smoke. So as soon as the second episode stops, he’s already on top of us, begging for attention.

I usually shy away from VMs because I have to dedicate a fixed amount of resources, e.g. ram.

I tend to rely on docker or bare metal services on a server. But I don’t use a server for gaming.

When you no longer can find a use for it.

Am I missing something here? Why use a VM for gaming?

I’ll take Linux with proton any day over all that faffing with windows and a GPU pass through.
