I am a total ignoramus about law, but this sounds more like a legislative failure than a judicial one.

But the appellate judge ruled Tuesday that the interception and recording of mobile phone activity did not meet the Washington Privacy Act’s standard that a plaintiff must prove that “his or her business, his or her person, or his or her reputation” has been threatened.

If we had comprehensive federal data privacy law, then we wouldn’t have to challenge these practices against wet-noodle state laws that weren’t actually designed for it, right?

Journalists communicate to laymen, and the most common name of the area you’re referring to is tarmac. Personally I think it would be worse practice to refer to it as the apron, which is apparently the correct word, because it would be confusing to the audience.

For Facewatch’s Gordon, the argument against using the technology is weak. “Normal customers aren’t going to be tracked and traced. The idea that they are is complete rubbish."

In other words: Yes we have the means, but the idea we would abuse profitable data already available to us is absurd.

If I were predisposed toward conspiracies I would definitely be convinced by now that every medium-to-large business owner in the country was part of a secret cabal who made a pact to demand return to office for whatever terrible reason sounded good to them.

My own workplace is mandating a hybrid model for any employees within 30 miles of an office after “much research, discussion, and debate with employees.” They’ve typically been very reasonable and generous to their workforce, and I just don’t understand what they’re thinking, honestly.

Neat idea, seems kinda useless unfortunately. Since it’s entirely crowdsourced (I assume from my brief visit), you’re getting very anecdotal information, and I think it’ll be biased towards people who’ve had bad experiences with products. Feels like you’d need a huge community of pretty dedicated contributors to make this work, and I’m skeptical that can be built from the ground up for this narrow purpose.

For those who have only seen the headline:

U.S. assessed Ukraine’s counteroffensive strategy and made recommendations, and now Ukraine is adjusting its strategy accordingly. The headline makes it sound like an endemic issue. Some analysts think it’s too little too late, but I wish them the best.

For anyone who doesn’t know, there’s a whole genre of television (as I understand it) affectionately called K-Dramas that come out of South Korea. I’ve only watched Vincenzo myself, but my partner has been addicted for most of this year so I’ve seen bits and pieces, and honestly…they’re really, really good junky tv. Junky in the sense that they brazenly use a lot of cliches and liberally run aground of logic for the sake of better spectacle or happier outcomes. But I feel like American TV sucks at that kind of thing these days, and it’s really entertaining.

And there are (probably) hundreds of these shows on Netflix, with a super passionate fanbase. South Korea is unbelievably prolific and the shows have really high production values, great performances, and a lot of heart. They deserve a lot of recognition (and compensation).

They’re claiming that construction costs raised substantially and unpredictably and due to that can no longer fulfill their obligations.

I caught two important points on that argument though.

1. The original funding was granted through auction, which incentivised ISPs to underbid what costs would have been even under the best circumstances.

2. A separate coalition of ISPs who did not win claim that these market increases were not as unpredictable as claimed, and in fact were factored in by the more responsible participants in the auction:

The Coalition of RDOF Winners said these cost increases “could never have been anticipated by the Commission and RDOF winners prior to the auction.” But the WTA said that isn’t true and that its own telco members “and other responsible bidders factored these likely future cost increases into their Auction 904 bid strategies, and stopped bidding when the bid prices became so unreasonably low that projects were no longer financially feasible or sustainable.”

I’m inclined to believe the WTA. The auction occurred in October 2020, well into COVID when its volatile impact on supply chains and the like was apparent, which I was thinking might have been the crux of the winners’ argument.

No sympathy here for the winners, they made a deliberately reckless gamble and these are the consequences. But also it was a dumb way to grant this funding to begin with.
