read up to date current docs and know they are for the current working state of the system, potentially when i don’t have a net connection because i’m troubleshooting PID 0/1
turkeys straight up fly, they’re not even semi flighted like chickens
that’s a great example of bad docs.
this is everything i see monitoring Linux boxes everyday. we’ve shifted mostly to OpenRC about it. i can’t imagine defending SystemD if you have experienced anything other than it and SysInitV. yeah compared to SysInitV, it’s really nice, but to say it’s good and stable? that’s like praising your landlord for all the work they do and the reason they haven’t fixed your broken dishwasher is because they’re so busy from what a good landlord they are
is it 5000 consistent users or is it 5000 randos that on any given day tries turning it on to see if it was all in their head and actually these devices were kinda useful. then they don’t use it again because no actually, it really is that bad
In fact, the situation has gotten much worse. The coupling of SystemD’s components to each other has gotten tighter. The coupling of things that aren’t SystemD to SystemD has gotten tighter. SystemD itself has gotten less stable. The overall result? Our operating systems require more, not less, troubleshooting, and they’re less, not more, enjoyable to use and develop on
SystemD has been such a frustration the last couple years with the wonderful simplicity and stability it used to provide managing a system completely out the door as its main development company (RedHat) has stopped giving any kind of a shit about being a positive force in the world. We all shoulda listened 10 years ago when the greybeards were telling us not to fall for an init system trying to do too much.
signal has been eroding it’s trustworthiness, and all the stuff you said is why myself and most folks keep using it despite its downsides. in a perfect world more of us would be working to make xmpp a viable option for most people but as it stands it’s a touch too technical for the average person’s mom and dad, who are ultimately who you have to appeal to
telegram did something important by being the first mass market “private” messenger that people were aware of. it has outlived this usefulness by nearly five years now. even the things that replaced it at this point are getting run into the ground and require replacing.
how’d you do that?
Yeah which if that’s the argument we’re having… I kinda don’t want to give people that dumb any influence. The fediverse symbol is not a pentagram and if the rainbow giving gay people visibility is somehow wrong, then… Fuck me I guess because I’d rather make gay people comfortable than a bunch of folks who’ve fallen down some manner of christofascist rabbit hole
The weak argument they make is this doesn’t look good at small sizes. Personally I don’t think that constitutes a good enough reason to rebrand the fediverse
Microsoft is still who vetted and hired the contractor and who selected the location.
And yeah. Past CEOs of Microsoft have continued to be shitty. They’re who’s responsible for what’s going on. I just wanted to talk about the ways white knight philanthropy doesn’t help, it just perpetuates colonialism, and Bill Gates+Microsoft have always been in lock step in this regard.
The point is the true villain here is colonialism
So construction waste is a subcategory of industrial waste. Typical industrial waste includes toxic materials like excess cement, fiberglass, bits of plastic from wires and cables. But once the data center is in place, most likely the waste will be e-waste in nature. Think heavy metals, copper, and yet more plastic. And the thing is… This is why they’re putting this data center here. Disposing of this toxic waste will be cheaper because it’s less regulated. The long term cost of high tech industries like this to neo-colonialized communities like this is the communities themselves. It doesn’t matter to Microsoft they’re making the water undrinkable. They don’t have to live there.
And realize, too. Bill Gates’ philanthropic missions aren’t accidents. He may not run the show at Microsoft anymore but he still benefits greatly from their business. His philanthropic efforts aren’t about making the lives of people who are exploited better. They’re about maintaining that cheap form of labor just a little bit longer. And that may not be Bill Gates’ actual intention, but the fact of the matter is he’s a billionaire. He could make much larger changes in the world by not being a billionaire. He has power and influence to do things the rest of us can’t, but instead of treating the illness he treats the symptoms. His actions sustain the system he benefits from
Using the internet without an adblocker is genuinely dangerous. Everyone really should be using uBlock Origin. Using a web browser that prevents uBlock Origin puts you in danger
The ad company blocking an ad blocker is totally about security

Hardware specs were too constrained for regular daily use. The software updates are always way behind schedule, and the company is too small to support their warranty (I really do think they’re doing their best to do what’s right, but they’re just super slow on turnaround for support)
I only know about Fairphone and Teracube. Having owned a Teracube I recommend not getting a Teracube
i think some big project, something really important, needs to migrate for the masses of devs to move too
