  • Just want to weigh in on Resolve. I was able to get the free version running on Mint, but the free version can’t do H.264. I then bought Resolve Studio, but activating the license did not work so I ended up on Windows for video editing.

I also had to switch back to Windows for Affinity, as I have been using Photoshop for years and I have yet to find another piece of software (excluding Affinity) I can move at speed in.

Once I get the content creation off Windows, I can probably leave it behind for good.

  • Actually, I think that one at least has some history to it.

The disk drive was one of the first ways to store information between computer sessions as the first computers didn’t have built in storage. You would create a program, run it, and then when you shut the computer off it was gone. Since the disk drive was used to store programs for later, or “save” them, the icon was born from the physical object.

Sharing, conversely, doesn’t really have a real world example to base the icon on. Maybe two hands exchanging things? Perhaps two arrows to illustrate the ability for things to go both ways? Maybe a set of interconnected dots to show the connection between things? Any of them could work, so the iconography is less clear.

  • I’ve seen a lot of rulers that actually don’t have a mark at 0 and instead go right to the edge as 0. Typically they are worn down, being made of wood, so the accuracy of the first inch is dubious. To ensure the distance is correct, sliding the ruler down one unit is a good idea. So, my ruler starts at 0 but my measurements start at 1.

  • I’m all for removing gender as the first dividing line, but there needs to be some divisions in place.

As an example, in martial sports they are often separated by weight class to balance the fact that a larger, heavier person would have an advantage over a smaller, lighter person.

Without that, basketball would be dominated by the tallest people only, but that means there is no reason for anyone who isn’t tall to even play the game. Break it into height classes and suddenly you meet have a league of skilled, average height players that could be very compelling to watch.

  • You’ll want to search online for a USB hub and find one in your price range with the features you want. I use Newegg for that sort of thing, and I like the Orico brand for it. I don’t have a specific recommendation because I don’t think there is much benefit from one to another.

I will also say that most wireless peripherals are USB 2.0 speeds, so a 3.0 hub would not provide much benefit to them. That said, having more bus speed available should allow for more devices on the hub without throttling each other.

The thing I find more important is an external power source if you’re connecting many devices. I run my mouse, keyboard, webcam, microphone, Bluetooth adapter, controller dongle, and streamdeck all through a hub mounted under the desk.
