Thanks for your detailed response. I thought about an old office PC, but I guess they’re not even close to <10W idle.
Another quick newbie question: What do you need PCI Slots for? Many SATA ports for Drives makes sense to me, but why PCI

Thank you for your super detailed response. That’s a lot of information 😅 Talking about codecs is only applicable to torrenting, right? (I’ve never seen a streaming site talk about the codecs they use).
I don’t really mind paying a bit (and hopefully supporting the creation of new media), but it’s unbelievable that Disney+ butchers a lot of the most memorable Pixar scenes, with terrible compression. (When a lot of snow, confetti or other particles are on screen).
PS: I live in the EU, so I’m not signing away my right to live by subscribing to a streaming service. WTF is going on on the other side of the atlantic. I can’t even believe what a capitalist nightmare some call the United States of America.
Thanks 👍
Do you have a favorite torrenting site?
Actually Hunter Gatherer Tribes spent just around 4 hours a day hunting and gathering. Including food preparation and consumption they spent 40 hours a week wich is less than modern humans (if you count work + cooking)

Of course hunger, famines, illness, suffering and death were frequent occurrences (so I wouldn’t want to switch places), but for most of human history we had enough time and recourse for random shit like socializing, drawing, singing, dancing, sacrifices, worshipping gods and so on.
It’s always good to read different opinions about topics like that.
So I should look into hosting docket on my pi and upgrade as soon as I feel like it?
It’s there any way around this? I don’t want my smart home applications to run sluggish. They need to have priority.
Can you tell me a good scanner with integrated OCR? I used to love vflat, but they took a dark turn with a pricey subscription plan
I guess that’s a possibility. But I think most artists want their work (at least their studio records) to be available to as many listeners as possible. I think paywalling most content will not be successful for the artist nor the record label. (The same way exclusivity deals with streaming services haven’t really worked out).
But I wouldn’t really mind paying 1 dollar per artist for some bonus tracks, when I know that when 6000 people do the same they will be able to succeed financially
I looked at it, but got kinda confused. The instance I logged in didn’t seem to share any music with other instances.
That’s a great point. While I don’t think streaming services can uphold their low prices (and I’m also happy to pay 20 bucks when the artists gets a fair share) I think buying all albums you maybe wanna listen to is way to expensive. Buying music also raises the barrier to discovering new music and cultivatinng a diverse taste in music.
I agree that it’s a great way to support your artist, but honestly I don’t think it stands a chance to become as big as streaming services. The convince of being able to explore almost every artists catalogue at the touch of a button is just too good. (Also great for sharing music or creating a shared playlist)
I think the problem of storage space is also often overlooked. Not everyone has enough storage on their device. (I know I didn’t, when I still used MP3s on a modern smartphone)
I think our shared goal is easily accessible modes of transportation for everyone. Sadly cars are quite exclusive (elderly, children, drunk people, poor people…) and have a big negative impact on the environment (pollutants, noise, space required to park them 23 hours per day and much more).
You correctly picked up on the conflict between people living in the city and people living in the suburbs. People driving into the city makes the city a more dangerous, noisier and worse place to live in wich results in even more people (who can afford it) moving to the “quiet and peaceful” suburbs.
That said we can’t blame people for making rational choices for their lives. We need to create a society where taking the train or moving near your workplace (in Europe most people live within 5 to 10km of their workplace) is a viable and comfortable option for the individual.
For your specific case it seems that you’re best option is to rely on a small, pre-owned, efficient car. That said there are still some things you can do to reduce your negative impact. -Most importantly take part in your local politics. A small grocery store or some form of public transportation would make life easier for many folks in your community
While a country connected by train sounds unrealistic and futuristic for most Americans the exact opposite is the case. The US ran on trains for the most part of its history. Almost every town built before 1940 had a train station at some point in time.
We are definitely off to a good start :D Still there are starting to show problematic signs
In some news communities people are obviously upvoting news article based on nothing more than the headline. This creates an environment where only articles with polarizing headlines succeed, and a real discussion becomes impossible
Really made me understand why my own fridge (and especially the freezer part) is this bad. Bless this channel
Old Laptop actually sounds interesting to me, very nice form factor for my “inside the bookshelf” approach, but probably a lot of tinkering.
How do thin clients compare to a pi 4? I’ve heard most of them are worse in computing power and efficiency in comparison to the Pi.
