2·25 days agoShould a program like that be initiated, they will admit that they are edgelords / demagogues and they don’t actually believe in any of this (the NK stuff in particular is strong evidence that this is all online roleplay).

73·25 days agoA democratic society? Since when does a democratic society have a leader for life and organises mass killings and torture of citizens?
Iran is aiding russia in its genocidal imperialist invasion of Ukraine, or does that not count?
Is this a satirical comedy account? A parody of “Lemmy leftists”?

61·25 days agoI am referring to the use and marketing of Grok for making nude deepfakes and CSAM.
Further in this thread you claim that people are allegedly detached from reality. The reality of the matter is that Apple’s app store policy is not consistent and there are special rules for certain entities.
Surely CSAM generation and involuntary nude deepfakes are a bigger deal than piracy, I think an average person on the street (in any country, doesn’t have to be the US) would agree with me.
I also don’t see where judges come into play? Has Rave been sued in court?

1115·26 days agoI will quote your post since it’s worth sharing with other people (this was news to me, but I am not surprised at all)
Are we supposed to bring back the whole history every time Rimu comments anywhere?
- an anarchist.nexus admin calls for murder of Zionists in their username
- a LW admin and Rimu gets qualified as Zionists in dbzer0 community modlogs
- LW defederates anarchist.nexus
- Rimu bans that admin
- that anarchist.nexus admin changes their username and steps down as admin
- LW refederates anarchist.nexus
- Rimu asks the dbzer0 staff to act on the modlog calling him a Zionist, no action is taken, the dbzer0 staff advices him to ignore that
- Rimu discovers that a dbzer0 mod has been using a LLM for moderation. That mod has been somehow pretending to use OpenAI to upset the !fuckai crowd, actually it was a local freeware model. He posts about it.
- a dbzer0 admin reverts the ban calling Rimu a Zionist after I asked
- Rimu is still upset, doesn’t take the previous action into account and keeps the post about LLM moderation up
- You bring it up here
Really goes to show how “leftists” on the Threadiverse are committed to acting in good faith.

This sounds like you are fishing for sympathy. Do you have anything to back up the claim about opposition to a pro-trans stance?

3·26 days agoI am curious what do you see as being disease? What’s going on in the US seems like a pretty typical oligarch takeover of political parties, judiciary and media (this is not even something unique to the US, can and does happen in many places).
Solving the disease of course depends on the given local context, but more often than not you will have to prosecute oligarchs in addition to a broader package of anti-corruption and judicial reforms.

9·26 days agoNo need to shoot him, we just need an independent court to put him on trial for enablement of the Rohingya genocide and knowingly gaining $14 B in commissions from fraud (while developing a “playbook” to claim that this was legal).
Don’t even need to shoot him, it would be much better to give him 50 year community service as a junior janitor on the Rohingya refugee camp on the island of Bhasan Char should he be found responsible. If he is too good for that, than he can do 50 years in prison instead.
This should also apply to any other senior executives involved in these two cases.
And these are just two cases, there are definitely other, less well known, “regional” cases involving Meta goons and Zuckerberg.

31·27 days agoApologies, I meant this in a more general sense.
Perhaps a clearer phrasing would have been that I believe (and in this I agree with Spaleta) that it will not be possible for open source supporters and society more broadly to ignore ML products/services at scale.

161·28 days agoI tend to agree with Jef Spaleta, LLMs and ML tech/services are not going anywhere and they will continue to have a bigger impact on our lives.
You can’t just reject the notion of ML products/services, they clearly have significant utility (not just LLMs, I do a lot of video ML upscalling as a hobby and you’de be surprised with the result you can get for DVD or even VHS quality source material).
The ethical dilemmas inherent to AI tech are not technical in nature. The root cause is tied to the current oligarchic regime and the inability of the largest and most powerful democratic-leaning society to deal with corruption.

182·1 month agoWas just going to say that…
From my time in the US, what you describe seems like a pretty run of the mill local rhetorical strategy; a tried and true American polemic if you will.
Sure, but even with something like online political discourse you can do better than getting obsessed over a bastardized provincial political term (liberal which means something completely different outside of the US) and providing cover for promoters of russian and Chinese genocidal imperialism and propaganda. We are not talking about a deep discussion on philosophy and political economy, just the absolute basics.
Can’t speak for your definition of leftist spaces, but many (not all of course) self-proclaimed western leftists IRL have a very performative approach to imperialism (among other things).
I’m lowkey kind of fascinated this morning with what feels like a moment of real panic among western liberal-democratic institutions (projecting a little from my morning news and coffee). That an anarchist instance is getting this much targeted harassment feels like a microscopic extension of that (if I allow myself to be so bold)
As far as I can tell, dbzer0 isnt even being explicitly called out here, but it has an undeniable bdzer0 flavor to it. If it doesnt come out that this was one of our mods at this point, I’d almost be disappointed
These type of posts are why people (from all walks of life) view western leftism as more of an aesthetic, performative thing.

This should have been disclosed to the public and not done in secret.
The notion of political profiling is also pretty crazy, although it is not surprising considering how common it is to find fake communists and demagogues.

101·1 month agoI’ve been looking into non Google/Apple smartphone alternatives in a serious way since Google set a path to abandon sideloading (it’s happening, they will use a phased approach) as I use a lot of open source apps and I avoid Google Play whenever possible.
For whatever reason it seems Pine Phone is often very difficult to get up and running, this is of course just anecdotal evidence. I actually heard about Pine a long time ago when evaluating their Rock series SBCs; they looked good on paper, but practical implementations left much to be desired.
I am personally saving up for Jolla phone:
https://commerce.jolla.com/products/jolla-phone-sep-ii-2026
I want to get the 12/256 variant, so that works out to €800+.
Pricey considering I’ve been getting mid-range devices ($450 absolute max) for the last 10 years; but this seems like the most user friendly option for a phone that doesn’t run on a US-based software platform.

For some reason this reminds me of the “effective altruism” movement (if you can call it a movement).
