That’s funny and all but if it happened 1 in 12 the chances that it’s very common are orders of magnitudes higher than it being super rare DUH

But yes, you get the gist of it. Every company is somewhat unique in the way they may or may not be able to handle such an event.
“I feel sad” will get you in trouble with most companies of earth.
“They just put down my dog” will find some companies more willing to accept that as a reasonable motive to take a day off.
“I feel sick” will let you to stay home in most places / legislations.
I wouldn’t categorize it as a day where you call in saying “I feel sad” and get a day off. I call it the day you call in saying “They just put down my dog” and get a day off.
None of those very valid examples are commonly tied with “today I feel sad”.
Imagine the sort of person that had their child die and being “O no I feel sad!”.
Luckily life happens inside and outside the workplace. You, or let’s say I, I will be sad and working, I will be happy and working.
I won’t work, if something egregious like you mentioned happened to me, or even a lot less.
Feeling sad is not a mental health issue.
