  • I do the same in Japan. Most residential streets don’t have sidewalks so we share them with cars, pedestrians and bicycles. Some of the bigger streets have quite wide sidewalks (one car lane’s width or more) so I would use those.

But in this photo, the sidewalks are minuscule. I especially understand the dog walker choosing the road instead.

I’m happy that my town has started to widen sidewalks and reduce the width of roads to promote more foot traffic in the downtown area.

  • That’s sucks. I’m not from the UK but isn’t there already a line rental fee she has to pay monthly or yearly? Is the “upgrade” more expensive overall?

Seems maybe a mobile phone is a better solution. At least they still work if the power is out (not if it kills the cell network too of course).

But your mum would have to change her phone number and learn a new device. And remember to charge it.

I remember getting my grandma a mobile phone for emergencies (Nokia 3310) and it was so hard for her to grasp how to use it.

  • Japan here. I use credit or cashless payments linked through credit almost exclusively. It makes it easy to manage family finances, as although there are no joint bank accounts here, you can have family credit cards. So one card for family expenses, and another for personal expenses.

Plus by default, credit cards in Japan are basically charge cards; they are paid off every month by direct debit. There is no interest in this case. You can also split payments over two months without incurring interest. Also, many credit cards offer bonus payment (typically workers receive summer and winter bonuses, card companies allow you to delay payment until that time without incurring interest).

  • Probably no better than google privacy wise etc but Amazon photos covers all of your bases, and is included as part of the prime subscription. So if you are a prime member you may already have a “free” alternative. There is no storage limit for regular photos either.

It’s actually the reason I became a prime member here in Japan, because just for the photo storage it was much cheaper than other cloud options like apple etc.

I have an Epson (not eco tank) and it has this. It is called a maintenance box. But you can get one off Amazon etc for a few dollars and it is easy to replace, just one screw off the front. The display literally shows you how to do it!

I love my Epson. I use generic cartridges and they work fine. When you install a generic cartridge it gives you a warning, and that’s it. I have it on wifi but I have disabled firmware updates in the settings.
