Similarities between wage labor and slavery were noted as early as Cicero in Ancient Rome, such as in De Officiis. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, thinkers such as Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Karl Marx elaborated the comparison between wage labor and slavery, and engaged in critique of work while Luddites emphasized the dehumanization brought about by machines. The introduction of wage labor in 18th-century Britain was met with resistance, giving rise to the principles of syndicalism and anarchism.

Before the American Civil War, Southern defenders of keeping African Americans in chattel slavery invoked the concept of wage slavery to favourably compare the condition of their slaves to workers in the North. The United States abolished most forms of slavery after the Civil War, but labor union activists found the metaphor useful – according to historian Lawrence Glickman, in the 1870s through the 1890s “[r]eferences abounded in the labor press, and it is hard to find a speech by a labor leader without the phrase”.

They’re forced to work for you and do as they’re told by you lest they find their lives / livelihoods in jeopardy. That’s slavery. You just rent them instead of owning them outright. Just because every business in the world currently uses slave labor does not make it right.

The internet does not mean “wires” any more than electricity means “wires”. It may use wires in places, but that does not define the concept.

Internet is just an interconnected network of computers. The connections between those computers can be wired with copper, wireless over radio, or they can use light through fiber optic cabling made of glass. The internet is about the concept of getting disparate / discrete machines to communicate, wires are just one of the tools it can use to do that.

lol well i certainly hope it doesn’t become a pandemic. This particular strain is the Andes virus though, and it does spread person-to-person. Apparently it’s not as easy to do as with coronavirus, though? Also, if you think about any big city, there are a lot of rats / rodents in close proximity to humans, just like when the plague happened.

Not to say that I am worrying, or that anyone should, just that I don’t find anything out of the realm of possibility at this point.
