A calf at a ranch in Texas tested positive on Wednesday for the flesh-eating parasite, the first case confirmed in Texas since 1966.

Thank you, Trump and Musk, for defunding government programs that keep people, animals, and the environment safe. Like everything you ruin, fixing it is going to be extremely difficult and incredibly expensive - at least for the things that can be fixed at all.

Consider how polluting beef is compared to other meats, switch to any alternatives would be a good thing anyways.

I think in a global sense maybe but increasing Canadian beef production increases Canadian pollution. As much as higher prices will discourage consumption they will also encourage production.

Could be imported from somewhere safer than Texas, but surely people prefer life / safety than they want a specific meal?

Most people don’t care where their meat comes from. No one is out there ordering Texas specific steaks. Consumers notice when the price goes up. I don’t know the stats for Canada. They may not import much from Texas anyway. I know Canada is already very protective in dairy but I don’t know about beef.

The MAGA regime has shut down so many oversight and regulatory bodies by now that you have to consider that this is a food safety hazard from there that we know about.

Thanks trump/DOGE/Congress. God, doge cutting funding for border cattle inspections right as Mexico was dealing with a surge was beyond stupid. And they’re trying to cut more staff at the USDA? Jesusfuck, this is so fucking stupid. With Canada restricting imports from Texas, they’re doing more to contain this literal plague than the US government, and, unfortunately, Texas is dependent of the federal government to respond appropriately.
