First thought: How did I end up in an AI-generated bullshit pic designed to inspire anger against hard-working service employees of restaurants?

Second thought: Fuck aaaaaaaall the way off with this intentionally divisive garbage.

Living in the Netherlands, I do a Grandpa Simpson and walk right back out the door.

But uh, being from the US and having not lived there in a few years… 40% tip now? Growing up it was 5%; 10% if it really good and 15% to be generous. The whole practice is so weird to start (there’s no difference in the effort involved serving an expensive steak vs serving a glass of soda, so why the hell does one demand a higher tip?) but saying the prices on the menu come with an invisible 40% markup… wtf?!

    To leave.

My second thought would be to print up a notice that says “If you can’t pay your staff, DON’T RUN A BUSINESS.” and go back and stick it to this notice board.

… of which I’d do neither. I have better things to do with my time.

Not in a tipping country… But iff i saw that… I gonna look for an other restaurant.

And 40 %? I would say iff you think thevtipping dystem is good. You tip for the work. One hour on the table = one hour off pay but : by 5 or 6 depending how manny other tables there are.

Same thing I’d say if I saw this picture on Lemmy - “why is this weird Facebook engagement bait breaking containment?”

I regularly tip around 30%, often above it, and I consider myself a pretty generous tipper. It’s absurd to act like 40% is standard.

Sometimes receipts will show suggested tip amounts and those are usually 18%, 20%, and 22% or something like that. Maybe 25%.

It’s really sad to see how good the propaganda has worked on these people. All the blame is shifted to each other instead of the elite asshole whose responsibility it actually is to make sure you get paid.
