Navidrome looks like good stuff. If I ever move off of Plex, I’ll absolutely be looking at it. I’m running macOS, but my goal is to buy a gently used Windows PC from a business or something (like they couldn’t upgrade it to Windows 11 or whatever’s after that) and replace Windows with Linux, and use it as a server. My Mac (M2 Pro, 16GB RAM) is more than enough machine to run multiple servers, but I’d rather do that with a dedicated machine running some *nix that I can terminal into from the Mac. Navidrome does run on macOS with minor tweaking that is not above my skill level, but when I set up the server I’ll be looking real hard at alternatives.

Definitely more advanced than what I do! I’ve also been collecting for a long time, and I’ve just been storing the media. I went from Windows/x86-64 to Mac/ARM64 a few years back, and I have kinda limited options that way. I would have just gone to Linux if my computers didn’t die, but at the time, Apple made sense.

I do Apple Music, but, that doesn’t answer the question. I also self-host my music via a Plex server. I got Plex Pass for well under $100 on sale years and years ago. Much harder to recommend now. Plexamp is awesome for music, and I also use Prologue (iOS app) for audiobooks hosted on Plex.

For tagging, I use Mp3Tag and tag manually. It was free on Windows, but the guy wants $30 for it on Mac. It’s a long story as to why, but after he was kind enough to explain it to me… I paid the man. (For my part, I’d used it for free for many years and I got a lot of miles out of it, and still do, and it’s a good, well maintained app from a solo developer.) There are free alternatives. Not so many good ones on Mac (part of why I paid). For album art, I get them from Apple using this handy site (not mine): https://bendodson.com/projects/itunes-artwork-finder/ — you can use 600px or you can use either 2000px or 3000px, I forget which. I’m good with 600px. I think Apple uses the smaller size for phones and the bigger one for TVs and Macs (especially as iMacs have 5K screens now).

My library might also not be as big as yours is. Plex says I have 14,462 tracks indexed. Maybe those are rookie numbers, I dunno. I pretty much have everything I want. All I’d really want now is to take my Apple Music playlists and download them to m4a 192k or similar. I have a few decade playlists that are like 500-600 songs each (80s, 90s, and 00s).

Also, does Jena Malone count? I saw her first movie, and wish I didn’t. It was on late night TV. I’m not naming it or linking it because it has some really explicit, NSFL stuff in it and trigger warnings like you wouldn’t believe. It was also briefly banned, and I happened to see it for sale on DVD with a big warning calling out what it briefly got banned for. You DON’T want to see it. (That said, she was not an extra, she was the most important character and basically the title character, it’s just obscure for other reasons, like, most people would have never seen/heard of this film.) (And I don’t want to talk about it, I like her acting but that film isn’t one I will discuss.)

Anyway, I would later see her in Donnie Darko and Contact, and while she’s never been a big star, mostly preferring indie flicks (she chose Contact because she always wanted to work with Jodie Foster, who is her role model), I’ll still watch just about anything she’s in. I think she’s talented and I enjoy seeing her work. Kind of like Jake Gyllenhaal. I don’t like a lot of actors for their acting, but when I find one I do, I tend to enjoy seeing them even if I don’t like anything else about the movie.

I’ve seen a couple YouTube videos about running a local LLM off a flash drive, and they say that’s uncensored. Also, it runs on Linux and Mac as well as Windows, so you’re not tied to old/ad-supported platforms. I’ve never actually tried it though.

Note that I have not tried it and thus, cannot vouch for it. Maybe I will someday, but I feel like I’m a bit too old for AI. I don’t… get it. I mean I can talk to a chat bot, but it doesn’t feel right. Like a guy who lives on the sea and thinks the land feels weird because he’s used to his sea legs (e.g. the scene in Waterworld near the end).

Anyway, if you want one that’s already spun up and ready to go, Duck.ai says it’s private, so it depends on whether or not you trust DuckDuckGo, but I’m not sure it’s uncensored. I’ve heard you can jailbreak a lot of AIs (to some extent) by telling it you’re researching the topic (the old “hypothetically speaking” with your fingers crossed behind your back), but I’m not sure how current that is.

That’s also not the “main NSFW instance that was publishing paedo content.” That was another instance and nobody federates with them anymore. I forget what it was called.

There’s a guy now who has been posting cartoon CP, but I don’t think they’re posting it on the big NSFW instance. I think they’re just posting it wherever. They’re not tagging it NSFW and they’re not posting in communities that tag everything NSFW. It’s all badly drawn cartoon toddlers lifting their skirts or bending over and you can see their underwear and the lines their genitals/buttocks make. The user gets banned, and they make a new account somewhere else a couple days later. Not sure what’s up with them, but they need help. I mean, it’s not real kids so I don’t hate them, it’s just something I don’t wanna see. And I think they know people don’t wanna see it. I feel like it’s Reddit users trying to disparage this platform by saying we’re no different from them. You could block the user, but they’re gonna get banned anyway and then they’re just gonna use a new account you aren’t blocking.

Even on mobile: I don’t use the YouTube app. On Android, this is a no-brainer, since you can run Firefox and uBlock Origin and bypass all the ads. On iOS it is a bit more dicey, but still advantageous to forego the app. Currently DuckDuckGo can bypass the ads for free. If you don’t mind paying, Wipr2 can also do it, in Safari. Then you just put a web shortcut to YouTube and bam, ad-free YouTube. Shitty icon though (it’s the regular icon in a white squircle). Either way, share from the browser, not YouTube.

Also, of course you can remove all the extra shit from the URL if you know how. That wisdom is lost on younger generations, but innate to older ones (who grew up around tech, like Millennials; or younger Gen X who adopted it at a young age — not like these iPad babies you have now).

I’m guessing because of the genocides? After the Holocaust, Jews pretty much got a Get Out of Jail Free card for decades to say/do whatever… Judaism doesn’t really recruit though, so this wasn’t really an issue until the Zionist war machine began committing genocide in Palestine. Christians haven’t actually been persecuted in ages. The thing is, Christianity is the most evangelical, so they go into other countries and try to convert everyone. Not everyone takes to it well. So when people resist conversion, Christians act persecuted, when no one was threatening them in their homes, but quite the opposite.

I would imagine that it would. The alternative is that it would not, which would mean that it would need some sensor to determine that you were no longer alive, at which point it would stop working. There’s no real point for it to have a feature to stop working. It’s probably better for it to be seen as ‘creepy’ by continuing to work inside of a dead body than for it to constantly be checking to see if you’re alive, since the surgery to change the battery is probably pretty invasive, so they want to do it only every so many years, to maximise its efficiency. Also, false positives (negatives?) would be problematic. You’d just want it to keep working regardless.

EMTs probably have a way to shut it down, though. It’s probably impossible or really difficult to do it accidentally, but I’m sure there’s a way. Good question for an EMT if you happen to meet one. They aren’t squeamish. It’s just a matter if they feel like talking to you or not, I suppose.

We’d have been on the same XDA forums if we had the same device. Otherwise we may not have met. I never owned an LG phone, though I was considering the LG G5. I also liked the one with the second screen, the grandfather of every “notched” phone (its second screen was “attached” to the main screen and to the right of the camera). V something? LG had some good ideas.

I had a Galaxy S3, and an HTC One M8. I do not recall what I went by on XDA. I use a new name every year or two. It’s entirely possible we crossed paths one way or another. I’ve been online a long time.

I cracked my 16PM screen the other day. Fortunately it was just the screen protector. I love how spoiled we are now. Wet wipe, dry wipe, dust sticker. Then this plastic applicator that holds the screen protector by these pins perfectly centred on the phone screen, and you pull this tab while pressing down and it applies perfectly every time. My old screen protector was up there almost 2 years, since I bought the 16PM in November '24. This is the second one, I have one more in the box.

Yes, Christian Selig. I wasn’t sure about naming him, but I guess he is somewhat of a public figure in that his name has been out there in the discussions and he did not necessarily use a handle for anonymity. I do not think I knew he was Canadian, eh. ;)

I didn’t think he was involved with Voyager. I thought Voyager was based on Apollo code. So, six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Android phones. I mean, Google has been an advertising company the entire time (2008 to now) that Android has existed, but the enshittification has gotten worse and worse. I still like Android, though. I’m an Apple guy, but I haven’t forgotten wiping Android phones and flashing them with custom firmware, and getting the “AOSP-like” CyanogenMod, or the bone-stock “Google Play Edition” Android on an Android phone meant to slam 5 ads in your face every second. It was always a losing battle, but it was fun.

I still want a newer Android phone. I have a Galaxy S10. It’s still a good phone, but it should be the next phone I replace, before replacing my iPhone 16 Pro Max (which should last another 7-9 years).

As for printers, HP is always a losing bet. They suck. Their lasers aren’t bad at work, but they’re not great either. It’s always something with HP. I’ve heard Brother lasers are cheap enough and rock solid. I don’t really need a printer though. If I did, I’d get that one Brother laserjet everyone’s talking about. Just web search “that one brother printer” and look for the review that just says “stop worrying about printers and get that one brother printer.” Follow their link to Amazon to get the part number, and shop around.

I got banned for saying paedophiles should face harsher punishment. I wasn’t even thinking of the American president, but a lot of that Epstein stuff was in the news at the time and they framed it as a threat to their guv’nor, I guess.

Lemmy is cool but it’s not perfect. Karma farming doesn’t work (but people still try it), so that’s cool. There’s a big echo chamber around Google/Android, Linux, Germany, Palestine, Ukraine, and a few other things. There’s a common theme there, and you’re probably welcome if you don’t fit all of those, but, read the room and “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Lemmy is kind of the “anti-Reddit” and that’s not always a good thing. But, as it grows, more diverse opinions and niches will grow. For example, I’m a Mac user. Not too many of us up here. Hopefully more join up.

Fun fact: Voyager is based on an iOS-only Reddit app called Apollo, though I’m not sure how closely related the two projects actually are. Back in the day, Apollo was the client to use on Reddit, but the developer was not willing to make an Android version. Also, he used to work for Apple, and described his project as “the Reddit client Apple would make, if they were so inclined”. It was the best one for a long time. Reddit accused the guy of trying to blackmail them, or something like that, but he had been recording the conversations, and he released the receipts. Naturally, everyone took his side and boycotted Reddit for a while. They all came crawling back eventually. Reddit banned third party apps, then began making their own app worse and worse to the point where it was basically unusable. So Reddit has been eating its own tail for a while now. Eventually it will catch up and eat more of itself. You can still find some good (old) content up there, so Reddit links are not worthless in web searches, but they’re trying to keep non-members from accessing it.

Anyway, while I use Mlem on my iPhone, Voyager is what I use on my Android phone. That phone is from 2019, and Voyager works great on it. I also have Voyager on my iPhone. I like both apps. You can’t go wrong with either of them.

I eat a primarily carnivorous diet — I need protein and plant protein will not suffice, for my particular condition (gastric sleeve patient) — with a little bit of carbs/starch. I need more vegetables, and I should target more fibre, but meat is what I go for. Some dairy but I don’t care much for cow milk. I’ll eat cheese, but the cream in my coffee is oat “milk”. I know it’s not milk, but it’s my creamer of choice. (Traditional creamer doesn’t have much cow milk in it, either. It’s mostly oils. Like your “French Vanilla” and “Caramel Macchiato”.

I assume they already know and have made the decision to not let it bother them.

Since he came up in conversation yesterday, I’ll use him as an example: say someone comes up and says how Chris Brown is such a good singer.

If I have any opinion on his actual singing, the conversation can go well even if I think, say, Drake is a better singer. (I did explicitly choose two R&B singers with different controversies.)

But if I say “yeah but did you see the police pictures of what he did to Rihanna’s face?”, then I feel like we’re about to be in a fight. They’re a fan, they probably already know. I just don’t see that conversation going well.

You could say that you don’t like artists who abuse others without directly referring to the specific incident, but if they ask you about who you like, you really have to be careful who you put up on your pedestal, lest they call you out as a hypocrite.

So I let it go.

Now if an American is telling me he likes Chris Brown, he likes Drake, and he supports Elon Musk and Donald Trump, he’s pretty much told me his position on women (and minorities) and I know this is a person to keep at arm’s length. I’ll speak to them, I’ll be polite to them, but I’m not going to introduce them to my younger sister or her 13-year-old daughter (if I had a younger sister, and if she had a 13-year-old daughter). But if they just wanna talk music, sure, we can have that conversation. I’d rather speak with someone who thinks it’s not okay to beat women, who thinks it’s not okay for grown men to have inappropriate relations with young girls, but if we’re just a couple people online separated by a huge distance talking about music? That’s fine.

I think it might be anti-Canadian stuff. Justin Bieber and Céline Dion got some of the same treatment, though Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morrissette did not.

Nickelback have never been bad. Boring, maybe. Generic, sure. But a lot of bands are generic and boring sometimes.

I don’t much care for Hero, but I think the hits off All the Right Reasons (Photograph, Far Away, Rockstar, Animals, etc) were all pretty solid. Never Again is a classic to me, especially the spoken part (“Father’s a name you haven’t earned yet / You’re just a child with a temper / Haven’t you heard don’t hit a lady? / Kicking your ass would be a pleasure”)
