Basically a friend in a group chat I’m in is suffering under abusive parents, specifically a mother who tends to beat her. The problem is that she lives in Dubai, which as I understand it is a humanitarian hellscape, and the second problem is that she’s still legally a minor, so it’s not just a question of getting her out of there. Is there anything that can be done in such a situation?

There is probably little practical help you can give, but don’t underestimate the importance and impact of social and emotional support.

When someone is in such a shitty situation, just knowing that there are people who care makes a huge difference. So just be a good friend. Listen and empathise when they need to talk about shit. Give them a laugh when they need cheering up or distraction from the bullshit.

If she’s discussing said exit plans with you, make sure y’all have some bare minimum OpSec.
By that I mean… encrypted chat, phone locks, deleting history, etc.
Otherwise just being there to listen can make a big difference even though I understand wishing to do more, sometimes you can’t and being there is good enough.

Fight against the fictional religions that support parents beating their children.

You want to send in a SEAL team? Give me a break. Everyone in every muslim country lives a shitty hellscape of religious torture every single day. Especially women. Maybe start talking to muslim women about supporting a religion designed to turn them into slaves with no rights.

This plight is shared by hundreds of millions of islamic women slaves. Yet, the problem cannot be solved if those women still support the religion that is enslaving them. There are plenty of women supporting the religions that harm them, for many different reasons.

It’s no different with any other religion. In the US, there are plenty of women supporting taking away women’s medical rights. Why? Only because of religion. No other reason.

You can offer emotional support, trying to interfere might make the situation worse for your friend.

I am willing to bet she already has some plan in place, she just might need help executing it when the time comes.

As another did, I also feel the need to ask: do you know This person? Like in real life? Are you 100% sure they are who they say they are and that this is all real?

This shit happens all the time, I am not doubting their story inherently. But unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who will play a con as long as they need to to extract money out of people who are sympathetic.

Again I am not calling into question the validity of your story, it’s that I don’t know anything about you or them, so I just want to get that out loud.

I’m in a similar spot with a young royal from West Africa trying to move money out of his country after the coup. I’m trying to raise the funds needed to pay the import taxes on it.

It’s very frustrating being a world away from his issues, but I’ll help if I can. He’s made a very generous offer to share some of the money, but I keep telling him I’m not doing it for that.
