I’m not convinced there is going to be that big of a upheaval. I feel like I’m seeing a similar pattern in reddit users as we have in Twitter users. Everyone’s in an uproar over how bad it’s getting and claims they’re going to leave, but it seems as though most are still using reddit every single day regardless, going “Yeah, any minute. I’ll show you. You’ll see. Just wait until July. Yeah, that’s when I’ll do it. I’ll fuckin’ do it. Try me.”, all the whole continuing to support the machine.

A lot of us have already cut ties and made the fediverse our new home, but for the masses it seems like it’s just going to be business as usual, albeit somewhat begrudgingly from those who were scorned by the API changes.

    I do hope I’m wrong.

We will see one final huge wave, when Redditors see how their third party apps are not working on July 1. Few apps that do work will start to break, except RedReader that got a non-profit exception, being a well made app for blind users.

I anticipate multiple waves to come over the next few years, as Reddit implements common strategies ahead of, or after, its IPO; including:

        1. Removing old reddit from the platform
        2. Forcing users to provide a phone number for account verification, ending all anonymity among alts
        3. Blocking anonymous browsing for all but the most mainstream subs or perhaps just r/popular

It’s all about the slow boil.

Exactly. A lot of what the protests did was embolden Spez. He basically thinks he can do whatever he wants now, but the expression “the straw that broke the camel’s back” applies here. He’s gonna keep making unpopular decisions that eventually make the site unusable for even the casual user.

I agree with this. RedReader is great for me even though I’m not blind.

I’m leaving my Reddit account behind permanently next week for Lemmy, been weaning off for two months and doing my farewell to Reddit tour.

It takes effort to set up a new app, so for now the path of least resistance is to stay on reddit. Once third party apps break, their users will have to set up a new app anyway, so might be willing to choose a fedi app instead of the official reddit app. But yeah, we’ll see.

I’ve heard that they’re going to have fireworks shows all across Canada to celebrate.

The US will delay their fireworks shows until the 4th, presumably so that they can spend the previous three days not pooping.

It’s going to be interesting for sure

I primarily use Reddit via 3rd party app and when that breaks I’m not going to be using Reddit on my phone.

Hopefully 0.18.1 drops before the first and a lot of instances upgrade to it quickly otherwise a lot of people might just bounce off of here due to some apps not working properly.

Once Sync for Lemmy drops I’m full in on Lemmy. Haven’t logged into Reddit since Day 1 of the protest but Jerboa hasn’t been as easy to use as Sync.

I just deleted my Reddit account, definitely won’t be browsing on my phone anymore. It felt pretty bittersweet but also liberating.

Its gonna be interesting to see. I subscribe to some smaller subreddits and I feel like a lot of the casual/ low key users are out of the loop. Either way, I plan to explore Lemmy more as I find new stuff.

I browsed /c/all for a couple weeks and picked up a few more subs with every pass. made a few guesses in the search bar, too, just to see if I could find some communities based on what I like discussing.

I subscribed to a ton of smaller ones, even without any content, just to see where they go. it’s going to be an interesting ride.
